An Epidemic of the Past

Due to the Bubonic Plague in Great Britain in 1665, which killed approximately 100,000 people (a quarter of the population of London) in only 18 months, a quarantine was called. That year, the students of the University of Cambridge were made to return home.

Among them was Sir Isaac Newton, a young man who, during the quarantine, turned his attention to building a bookcase and setting up his books to make an office. He then began filling a blank notebook with his ideas and calculations.

Removed from his life as a student, his creativity flourished. In that time, he discovered integral and differential calculus and formed the theory of universal gravitation. He also explored optics and experimented with prisms.

As noted by his biographers, “Solitary and almost incommunicado, he became the world's paramount mathematician.” When the epidemic had passed, he returned to finish his studies and became a renowned professor. The discoveries that he made far from the University transformed him into a great scientist.
